Description

Students correctly answer questions to reach the top of the mountain. With every correct response, they move further along the hiking trail—climbing higher and watching the scenery change as they go. How far will they make it? At the end of the game, a snapshot is taken to show how far up the mountain they climbed, creating a visual reward for their effort and progress.

This version focuses on addition algorithms, with students solving multiple-choice questions involving number sequences, patterns, and addition-based rules. It’s designed to reinforce fluency with algorithmic thinking and pattern recognition in a meaningful, goal-driven way.

Let’s Hike can be played solo or as a cooperative game—when played with more than one student, they must work as a team to answer the questions and help their group reach the summit together. The built-in challenge encourages replaying the game to improve accuracy and determination to reach the top!

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • ✅ Solve number sequence problems using addition-based algorithms
  • ✅ Recognise and extend patterns in number sequences
  • ✅ Apply efficient addition strategies with larger numbers
  • ✅ Build persistence and accuracy in solving mathematical problems
  • ✅ Engage in collaborative, team-based gameplay with a growth mindset focus

How to Play:

  1. Students are shown number sequences or pattern-based addition problems.
  2. They select the correct answer from the multiple-choice options.
  3. Each correct answer moves them higher up the mountain trail.
  4. In multiplayer mode, students work together to make decisions as a team.
  5. At the end, they receive a photo-style summary showing how far they climbed.

Ideas for Classroom Use:

  • 💡 Use during your number pattern or addition algorithm unit
  • 💡 Great for Year 4–5 students consolidating pattern-based number strategies
  • 💡 Play as a class warm-up, small group rotation, or targeted revision activity
  • 💡 Encourage students to reflect on their progress and set goals for a second attempt

Top Teacher Tips:

  • 💛 Let students personalise their experience by choosing from six characters before the game begins
  • 💛 Select the number of players or teams at the start of the game to suit individual, paired, or group play
  • 💛 Send the QR code home for students to play as a homework or revision task

Let’s Hike – Addition Algorithms supports students in building number pattern fluency while encouraging perseverance, teamwork, and mathematical confidence with every step up the trail!
