Description

Make division lessons fun, hands-on, and engaging with our Flip & Share: Popcorn Activity! This interactive resource is perfect for introducing the concept of equal sharing in a way that is both visual and tactile. Students will love working with popcorn-themed mats and cards to model division problems while building foundational understanding.


Students begin by flipping an instruction card and using their popcorn container mat and popcorn cards to represent the problem. They share the collection of popcorn equally between the containers shown, developing an understanding of division as equal grouping. The resource includes mats with set numbers of containers as well as separate container cards, giving you flexibility to suit your lesson needs. Colour-coded instruction cards make small group setup quick and easy.


With its real-world theme and simple setup, Flip & Share: Popcorn is perfect for small group maths work, whole-class introductions, or independent practise. The hands-on approach helps to make abstract concepts more concrete and memorable for students.

Materials Needed

  • Printed mats and cards on thick cardstock for durability
  • Scissors
  • Laminator and pouches (optional)
  • Counters or playdough (optional alternative to popcorn cards)
  • Write-and-wipe sleeves (optional) for mats

How to Use

  1. Print, cut, and laminate the mats and cards.
  2. Place the popcorn container mats (or separate container cards) in front of each student or group.
  3. Students flip an instruction card to reveal the division problem.
  4. They model the problem by sharing the popcorn cards equally between the containers.
  5. Record answers on the optional recording sheet if desired.
