Mass Mastery

Description
Mass Mastery is a fast-paced and interactive board game designed to consolidate your students’ understanding of mass measurement and unit conversions. With a focus on converting between kilograms and grams, this engaging resource turns number crunching into friendly competition.
Designed for small group play, students will move around the board by answering mass conversion questions, gaining valuable fluency in recognising and applying their understanding of metric units. Whether they're working with whole numbers or dealing with more complex decimal conversions, students will practise identifying equivalent measurements in a fun and purposeful way.
Perfect for maths rotations, early finishers or review lessons, Mass Mastery offers enough boards to cater for up to six players at once. It’s a hands-on, curriculum-aligned way to reinforce skills while promoting mathematical conversation and strategic thinking in a collaborative setting.
Key Learning Outcomes:
- ✅ Convert between kilograms (kg) and grams (g) fluently
- ✅ Apply mathematical reasoning to determine equivalent measurements
- ✅ Develop fluency in using metric mass units in real-world contexts
- ✅ Strengthen mental computation and estimation skills
What’s Included:
- Main game board for up to 6 players
- Conversion question cards (kg to g and g to kg)
- Answer key for teacher or peer checking
- Player tokens and dice template (or students may use their own)
- Instructions sheet for setup and gameplay
Materials Needed:
- Printed game boards and question cards (cardstock recommended for durability)
- Dice and small player tokens or counters
- Optional whiteboard and markers for working out conversions
How to Use:
- Print the game board, question cards and tokens for each group of players
- Students take turns rolling the dice and moving their counter around the board
- On each space, students answer a mass conversion question (e.g. 1.4 kg = ? g)
- If correct, they remain on the space - if incorrect, they return to their previous position
- The winner is the first to reach the end of the game board
Ideas for Classroom Use:
- 💡 Use during maths rotations to reinforce conversion skills with a partner or group
- 💡 Set up a Mass Mastery challenge station as part of a measurement-themed week
- 💡 Use as a review activity before formal assessment of measurement content
Top Teacher Tips:
- 💛 Laminate all components for long-term use across multiple groups
- 💛 Allow students to keep a conversion cheat sheet nearby as a scaffold
- 💛 Encourage students to explain their thinking when checking peer answers
Mass Mastery turns measurement practice into an engaging group challenge that promotes collaboration, quick thinking and deeper understanding. With its versatile design and classroom-friendly format, it’s the perfect resource to help students gain confidence and accuracy with mass conversions.
