How to Complete

Students will cut out the provided set of phonics word cards and sort them into categories based on their spelling patterns. Using the sorted words, students will create sentences and colour-code the focus sounds to reinforce their understanding of the spelling patterns. Please note that we have included three options to suit the needs of your class:

1. Students complete the word sort based on the words in the word bank.
2. Students add the correct spelling pattern to the words in the word bank before completing the word sort.
3. Students label each picture in the word bank before completing the word sort.

Additional Tips

1. Before students begin, review the focus sound and its spelling patterns as featured in the word bank.
2. Demonstrate how to sort the first few words, explaining the reasoning behind their placement.
3. Younger students may benefit from having the worksheet enlarged to A3.

Extension Ideas

1. Word Family Brainstorm: Ask students to think of additional words not included in the sort. They can brainstorm in small groups and add these new words to the columns on their worksheet.
2. Noughts and Crosses: Have students draw a 3x3 grid on a mini whiteboard. Assign a different spelling pattern to each student. Have them write 3 words featuring that spelling pattern in a row to win the game.
3. Crossword Creation: Students use the sorted words to create a crossword puzzle for their peers. They write clues based on the meaning or use of the words.
