Description
Help your students visually explore number patterns with the Skip Counting Pattern Grids. These engaging, colour-in style grids are perfect for reinforcing skip counting by 2s, 3s, 5s, and 10s, while encouraging students to look for patterns, sequences, and connections across the number chart.
Each grid is designed to be filled or coloured based on a chosen skip counting pattern, allowing students to build fluency and identify repeating sequences in a visual and tactile way. Grids are included for individual patterns (2, 3, 5, and 10), as well as a combined version where students can colour multiple patterns on the same grid to compare and contrast.
Also included are Challenge Question Sheets that encourage students to reflect on the patterns they see, make predictions, and justify their mathematical thinking. These extension questions are ideal for use during whole-class mat sessions, small group work, or as independent tasks for students who are ready to go further.
Key Learning Outcomes
- ✅ Practise skip counting by 2s, 3s, 5s, and 10s using visual supports
- ✅ Identify number patterns and repeated sequences
- ✅ Develop number sense and pattern recognition through colouring and discussion
- ✅ Apply mathematical reasoning to identify and explain observed patterns
What’s Included
- Individual skip counting grids for:
- - Counting by 2s
- - Counting by 3s
- - Counting by 5s
- - Counting by 10s
- Combined grid featuring all four skip counting patterns
- Challenge Question Sheets for extension and discussion
Materials Needed
- Printed copies of the skip counting grids
- Coloured pencils, crayons, or markers
- Laminator and whiteboard markers for reuse (optional)
- Clipboard or hard surface for floor-based activities
How to Use
- Select a skip counting focus (e.g. 5s) and distribute the corresponding grid
- Model skip counting aloud as students colour the correct numbers
- For the combined sheet, assign each pattern a colour and guide students to find overlaps
- Use the Challenge Question Sheets for class discussion or independent extension
- Display finished grids as a visual anchor for ongoing skip counting practice
Ideas for Classroom Use
- 💡 Use during a maths rotation to focus on number pattern fluency
- 💡 Incorporate into a whole-class skip counting mat session
- 💡 Pair with number songs to reinforce auditory and visual learning
- 💡 Display completed grids to highlight patterns and student thinking
Top Teacher Tips
- 💛 Assign each skip counting pattern a different colour for easy visual tracking
- 💛 Laminate the grids and use with whiteboard markers for reusable stations
- 💛 Use challenge sheets as informal assessment or maths journal prompts
The Skip Counting Pattern Grids are a practical and engaging tool to support number fluency, visual patterning, and mathematical thinking in your classroom.
