Zoo Coordinates LET’S EXPLORE
Description
Explore outer space and collect different objects to earn space badges as you warp between galaxies with every correct answer. With each successful response, students journey deeper into space—unlocking new locations and building a collection of achievements along the way!
In this version, students use a zoo-themed grid map to answer questions about the position and location of different animals. By identifying and interpreting coordinates, they develop map-reading and spatial reasoning skills while connecting mathematical thinking with real-world context in a visual and engaging format.
Let’s Explore – Zoo Coordinates is ideal for Year 2–4 students learning how to use grid references. Whether used in a geometry or geography unit, during rotations, or for independent play via the QR code, this game encourages students to practise coordinate reading while travelling through the stars!
Key Learning Outcomes:
- ✅ Read and interpret coordinates on a simple grid
- ✅ Locate animals and objects using ordered pairs
- ✅ Build spatial awareness and mapping confidence
- ✅ Strengthen understanding of grid systems and positional language
- ✅ Engage in interactive, space-themed gameplay that promotes logical thinking
How to Play:
- Students are shown a zoo map with a labelled grid and animal enclosures.
- They are given a coordinate pair and must identify the animal located at that position.
- Each correct answer earns a space object and allows them to warp to the next galaxy.
- Objects collected contribute to their final space badge tally.
- At the end, students view the complete set of badges they earned throughout their mission.
Ideas for Classroom Use:
- 💡 Use during maths or geography units focused on grid reading and location
- 💡 Great for Year 2–4 students learning basic coordinate systems
- 💡 Pair with a follow-up task where students create their own zoo map using grids and coordinates
- 💡 Follow up with a classroom floor grid activity to physically reinforce coordinate movement
Top Teacher Tips:
- 💛 Let students personalise their experience by choosing from six characters before the game begins
- 💛 Select the number of players or teams at the start of the game to suit individual, paired, or group play
- 💛 Send the QR code home for students to play as a homework or revision task
Let’s Explore – Zoo Coordinates combines space adventure with mapping mastery—helping students build coordinate skills while travelling from one galaxy to the next!
