Farm Compass Directions LET’S STEAL
Description
You’ve reached the tomb, and it’s time to get the treasure! Every correct answer unlocks another piece of loot—but will you bank it now, or risk it all for an even bigger reward? Be careful—one wrong move and your treasure could fall through the trapdoor!
In this version, students use a map of the farm to answer questions about the position of different animals using compass directions. Whether identifying what’s north of the chicken coop or east of the horse paddock, students apply their knowledge of location and directional language in a meaningful, map-based context.
Let’s Steal – Farm Compass Directions is ideal for Year 2–4 students building confidence with mapping skills, position, and direction. It’s a great addition to rotations, geography and maths units, or independent play using the QR code—with just the right mix of strategy and spatial awareness.
Key Learning Outcomes:
- ✅ Interpret simple maps using compass directions (north, south, east, west)
- ✅ Describe the location of objects relative to each other
- ✅ Build spatial awareness and mapping skills
- ✅ Use location and direction vocabulary accurately in context
- ✅ Engage in risk-and-reward gameplay that encourages careful thinking
How to Play:
- Students are shown a map of the farm with animal locations clearly marked.
- They are asked questions such as “Which animal is south of the pigs?” or “What is west of the ducks?”
- Each correct answer earns treasure—but players must choose to bank it or risk it on the next question.
- If they answer incorrectly after choosing to risk it, their unbanked treasure is lost!
- The game continues until all questions are answered. The player with the highest banked treasure wins!
Ideas for Classroom Use:
- 💡 Use during maths or geography lessons focusing on position and direction
- 💡 Great for Year 2–4 students learning to read simple maps
- 💡 Pair with a follow-up activity where students draw their own farm maps
- 💡 Combine with a classroom compass scavenger hunt to reinforce direction skills
Top Teacher Tips:
- 💛 Let students personalise their experience by choosing from six characters before the game begins
- 💛 Select the number of players or teams at the start of the game to suit individual, paired, or group play
- 💛 Send the QR code home for students to play as a homework or revision task
