How to Complete

Students will decorate a glass jar, add a battery operated tealight candle, and attach a sweet ‘You Light Up My World’ gift tag. The included editable gift tags make it easy to adapt the wording to suit diverse family dynamics.

In addition to the printable gift tags, students will need access to jars, acrylic paint, ribbon or string and tealight candles. We recommend cutting hearts out of clear contact. Add these to the jars before painting and once dry, peel away to create a negative space effect.

1. Pre-cut and apply a heart-shaped piece of clear contact to each jar. This creates a negative space effect when peeled away after painting.
2. Students paint their jars with acrylic paint. Glitter can be added while the paint is still wet.
3. Once dry, remove the clear contact heart to reveal the see-through heart shape.
4. Students may decorate the jar and lid with extra craft materials like sequins or stickers.
5. Insert a battery-operated tealight candle and close the lid.
6. Students colour in and personalise their gift tag.
7. Cut the tag as one piece and fold along the centre line.
8. Hole punch the folded tag and thread ribbon or string through the hole.
9. Tie the tag around the jar, ready to be gifted to someone special!

Additional Tips

1. Print the tags on thick white cardstock.
2. Prepare the contact hearts ahead of time to make the lesson run smoothly.
3. Set up painting stations before the lesson.
4. Either buy the jars in bulk from a shop, such as Kmart, or ask students to bring in recycled jars from home.
5. Encourage students to write a personalised message on the inside of the gift tag.
