Description

Support your students’ understanding of probability with the vibrant and practical What is the Probability? Posters – a valuable addition to any mathematics learning wall or small-group instruction area.

Designed to help students connect visual representations with numerical values, this set of posters focuses on five key probability benchmarks using a quarter-based spinner model. Students will explore each outcome in percentage, fraction, and decimal form, enabling them to make meaningful comparisons and strengthen their number fluency in a real-world context.

Each of the What is the Probability? Posters clearly presents a coloured spinner segment and models how probability is expressed in multiple mathematical forms. From events that are impossible (0%) to those that are certain (100%), these posters help students conceptualise how likely or unlikely an outcome may be, depending on the number of sections shaded on a spinner.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • ✅ Understand and compare probability using percentages, fractions, and decimals
  • ✅ Interpret visual representations of chance and connect them with numerical values
  • ✅ Identify key probability terms such as impossible, certain, and even chance
  • ✅ Recognise patterns in fractional probability with denominators of four

What’s Included:

  • Five full-page posters displaying a coloured spinner and the corresponding probability in three formats: percentage, fraction, and decimal
  • Posters include the following probability values:
    • Pink: 0%, 0/4, 0.0
    • Purple: 25%, 1/4, 0.25
    • Green: 50%, 2/4, 0.5
    • Blue: 75%, 3/4, 0.75
    • Yellow: 100%, 4/4, 1.0
  • Low-colour and black-and-white options to suit all printing needs

Materials Needed:

  • Printer and paper (cardstock recommended for longevity)
  • Write-and-wipe sleeves (optional for use at desks)
  • Blu-tack or magnets for classroom display

How to Use:

  1. Print your preferred version of the posters – colour, low-colour, or black-and-white.
  2. Display the posters in your classroom as part of your Mathematics or Probability display.
  3. Use them during explicit teaching sessions to introduce or review the connection between fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  4. Incorporate the posters into student reference walls or table group toolkits for ongoing reinforcement.
  5. Print smaller versions as part of student workbooks or maths journals for individual reference.
  6. Use the visual examples as prompts during data analysis or spinner-based activities and experiments.

Ideas for Classroom Use:

  • 💡 Pair these posters with spinner-based activities to reinforce understanding of probability values.
  • 💡 Use them as prompts during classroom discussions on how we express and compare chance events.
  • 💡 Have students match equivalent representations of probability in a maths centre using the poster visuals.
  • 💡 Include in small-group sessions as visual scaffolding when introducing new probability terminology.

Top Teacher Tips:

  • 💛 Laminate the posters or place them in display pockets for extended durability and reuse year after year.
  • 💛 For deeper engagement, challenge students to create their own spinner posters with different fractional values (e.g. eighths or tenths).
  • 💛 Keep a mini version of each poster in your teacher toolkit for quick reference during lessons or assessments.
  • 💛 Extend the learning by having students convert the given fractions to equivalent fractions (e.g. 1/4 to 2/8, 25/100) and explore new spinner designs.

What is the Probability? Posters offer a simple yet effective way to anchor probability concepts in your classroom – a perfect blend of colour, clarity, and curriculum alignment.
