Description

Need help figuring out where to start preparing to teach Earth & Space Sciences to your Year 2 students? Our What’s Up in Space? unit of work is exactly what you need!

Over the course of this 8-lesson inquiry-based unit, students will complete a variety of purposeful and engaging tasks that are aligned to the V9 Science Australian Curriculum and are ideal to complete as a part of your Science Program. The unit is designed to develop students’ proficiency in planning and conducting investigations related to space.

By the end of this unit of work, students will recognise that Earth is a planet in our solar system. They will learn about the solar system, the Sun and planets and will make a model of the solar system. Students will investigate the phases of the Moon. They will learn about star constellations and how people can use the stars for different purposes. Students will learn about the Sun and its position in our sky throughout the day. They will learn about and investigate shadows and how to tell time using a sundial.

The unit of work comes in a downloadable zip folder and contains the following resources:

  1. Unit Guide: includes a scope and sequence, unit overview, lesson plans with associated resources including assessments, rubrics and suggested resources.
  2. Informative PowerPoints: includes content related to some of the concepts taught in the unit, including celestial objects and space equipment, star constellations and First Nations perspectives.
  3. Game PowerPoint: a fun interactive game for students to play and apply their knowledge of identifying the Moon’s phases.
  4. Displays: includes a unit banner, a series of posters about the solar system, the phases of the Moon and patterns of the Sun, and word wall cards.
