Description

All aboard, it’s time to dive for treasure! In this exciting digital game, students answer questions correctly to collect treasure from the ocean floor. Each piece of treasure is worth a different number of points, and the player with the most points at the end of the game wins!

Students will be asked to consider the likelihood of different outcomes in a variety of everyday scenarios. They’ll be challenged to distinguish between outcomes that are equally likely, such as the number of possible outcomes when rolling a fair six-sided die, and those that are not equally likely. With every correct answer, they earn treasure to add to their boat, encouraging careful reasoning and comparison.

But watch out, answer incorrectly and your treasure slips back into the sea! Occasionally, a surprise treasure chest appears, offering students the chance to collect a mystery reward. This risk-and-reward element keeps students motivated while building foundational probability skills.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • ✅ Identify outcomes that are equally and not equally likely
  • ✅ Understand fairness and probability in simple scenarios
  • ✅ Compare the likelihood of events using real-world examples
  • ✅ Develop mathematical reasoning about chance and prediction
  • ✅ Engage in curriculum-aligned probability learning through interactive gameplay

How to Play:

  1. Students are shown a probability-based scenario and a multiple-choice question.
  2. Each correct answer earns a piece of treasure, which is added to their boat.
  3. If they answer incorrectly, they lose that treasure to the ocean.
  4. Occasionally, a surprise treasure chest will appear, containing a mystery reward.
  5. The game continues until all questions are completed. The player with the highest total gem points wins!

Ideas for Classroom Use:

  • 💡 Use during lessons on chance and data to reinforce probability language
  • 💡 Great for Year 4–5 students learning to reason about likelihood and fairness
  • 💡 Add to maths rotations to consolidate understanding of simple chance concepts
  • 💡 Follow up with hands-on tasks using spinners, dice, or coin flips to test predictions

Top Teacher Tips:

  • 💛 Let students personalise their experience by choosing from six characters before the game begins
  • 💛 Select the number of players or teams at the start of the game to suit individual, paired, or group play
  • 💛 Send the QR code home for students to play as a homework or revision task

Let’s Sail – Equally & Not Equally Likely gives students the chance to practise probability in a fun, interactive way where reasoning about chance brings them closer to treasure!
