Description

Bring fractions to life with Fraction Bingo: Halves, Quarters & Eighths. This engaging game challenges students to identify fractions of collections while also recognising equivalent fractions. By playing in a familiar bingo format, learners practise key skills in a fun, interactive setting that builds confidence and fluency.

The resource features collections of sea animals, providing a playful and visually rich context for understanding halves, quarters, and eighths. Because many of the examples include equivalent fractions, you can easily see which students are secure with these concepts and who may need further support. This makes Fraction Bingo both an enjoyable activity and an informal assessment tool.

Fraction Bingo includes six unique game boards, available in both high and low colour options. Ideal for small group work, it can be used across rotations or as a dedicated maths game time activity. Printing on cardstock or slipping boards into write-and-wipe sleeves ensures durability, while counters or tokens can be used to mark answers as the game progresses.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • ✅ Identify fractions of a collection using halves, quarters, and eighths
  • ✅ Recognise and apply knowledge of simple equivalent fractions
  • ✅ Strengthen visual fraction recognition through engaging game play
  • ✅ Develop reasoning, attention, and cooperative learning skills
  • ✅ Build confidence applying fraction knowledge independently and with peers

What’s Included:

  • 6 unique Fraction Bingo boards featuring collections of sea animals
  • High colour and low colour versions for flexible printing options
  • Set of fraction calling cards
  • Teacher instructions for easy setup and gameplay

Materials Needed:

  • Printed bingo boards on cardstock or placed in write-and-wipe sleeves
  • Fraction calling cards printed and cut
  • Counters, tokens, or similar markers for students to cover fractions
  • Optional laminator for extra longevity

How to Use:

  1. Print and prepare the bingo boards and fraction cards.
  2. Distribute one game board to each student or pair of students, along with a set of counters.
  3. Shuffle the fraction cards and draw one at a time, reading the fraction aloud and showing the card.
  4. Students check their board and place a counter if the fraction matches one of their collections.
  5. The first player to cover a full row, column, or diagonal calls out Bingo and wins the game.

Ideas for Classroom Use:

  • 💡 Use as a small group maths station during rotations
  • 💡 Run a whole class session with students working in pairs to encourage discussion
  • 💡 Incorporate into fraction review weeks or as an end-of-unit celebration game
  • 💡 Adapt the win conditions - for example, first to cover four corners or create a shape
  • 💡 Use as a formative assessment to observe students’ recognition of equivalent fractions

Top Teacher Tips:

  • 💛 Print boards on coloured cardstock and laminate for maximum reuse
  • 💛 Provide students with mini whiteboards to justify why a fraction is correct before placing a counter
  • 💛 Use different coloured counters for each round so boards can be cleared quickly
  • 💛 Store fraction cards in a small box or envelope to keep sets organised

Fraction Bingo: Halves, Quarters & Eighths combines fun, strategy, and mathematical reasoning in a low-prep format. With colourful sea animal visuals and opportunities for extension into equivalent fractions, this game is a perfect way to keep students motivated while mastering fraction skills.
