This purposeful back to school activity has been designed to accompany a whole class reading of the picture book First Day by Andrew Daddo. These no-prep worksheets provide the opportunity for your students to explore what should be packed in their school bag, prompted by the character in the book who packs her bag in preparation for her first day.

 

To complete the activity students will need to consider what should and should not be packed in their school bag, considering what they may need at school and why.

 

This resource includes three versions to suit the needs of your students. Choose from:

1. Sort images of items that should and should be packed in a school bag.
2. List and draw items that should and should be packed in a school bag.
3. Colour in items that should be packed in a school bag.

 

This resource provides the opportunity for an important discussion about appropriate and inappropriate things to bring to school, linking the conversation to student safety and keeping valuable items safe. Pack My School Bag would be a wonderful activity to complete at the beginning of the school year, or at any point if students need reminding about what is and is not appropriate to bring to school. Once complete, this worksheet could be sent home with students allowing them to have discussions with their parents or caregivers about what they need in their school bag
