Description

Get your students up and moving while practising addition skills with our Mathsercise Coding: Two-Digit Add One-Digit Worksheets. This fun and interactive activity combines algorithm practise, secret code cracking and physical movement to create a memorable learning experience. Perfect for indoor or outdoor use, this task adds energy and variety to your daily maths sessions.

Students begin by solving a series of two-digit plus one-digit vertical algorithm problems. They then use a code key to match their answers to letters and reveal a hidden exercise — think star jumps, lunges or toe touches! After performing their mystery movement, students switch roles and create their own coded challenge by writing new equations and matching them to a secret activity. Partners then swap, solve and perform the new routines.

Three differentiated versions are included to support a range of learners. Version 1 includes problems that require no regrouping, Version 2 includes some regrouping, and Version 3 includes only problems that require regrouping. This makes it easy to differentiate, extend or scaffold depending on your students’ needs. Whether used in the classroom, undercover area or playground, this resource encourages mathematical fluency, peer collaboration and movement-based learning.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • ✅ Solve two-digit plus one-digit equations using vertical algorithm strategies
  • ✅ Apply regrouping skills where required
  • ✅ Decode and create number-to-letter codes
  • ✅ Strengthen fluency through repeated addition practise
  • ✅ Combine physical activity with mental problem solving

What’s Included:

  • 3 differentiated worksheets:
    • - Version 1: no regrouping
    • - Version 2: some regrouping
    • - Version 3: all regrouping
  • Code key to match answers to letters
  • Space for students to create and swap their own coded challenge

Materials Needed:

  • Printed worksheets
  • Pencils or pens
  • Optional: clipboard for outdoor use

How to Use:

  1. Choose the worksheet version that suits your students’ ability level.
  2. Students solve each algorithm and record their answers.
  3. Using the code key, students decode a mystery exercise.
  4. They perform the exercise before moving to the challenge section.
  5. Students write their own equations and code for a partner to solve and act out.

Ideas for Classroom Use:

  • 💡 Use as a warm-up during maths or PE rotations
  • 💡 Add to a fitness-themed numeracy station
  • 💡 Assign different versions to support differentiation
  • 💡 Take outdoors for an energising brain break with purpose
  • 💡 Use to build fluency while keeping energy levels high in the afternoon

Top Teacher Tips:

  • 💛 Laminate code keys for reuse across multiple versions
  • 💛 Model how to align numbers correctly in vertical form
  • 💛 Encourage creativity in exercise selection for peer challenges
  • 💛 Use as a way to informally assess student understanding of regrouping

Mathsercise Coding: Two-Digit Add One-Digit Worksheets turn traditional algorithm practise into a fun, active learning opportunity. With built-in differentiation, collaborative extensions and a movement-based twist, this resource supports engagement, accuracy and creativity all at once.
